众所周知，语言是人类传达信息和交流思想的最直接方式并且在不同民族和文化中起着桥梁的作用。习语是人类智慧的结晶，是一个民族语言中的精华。此外，习语作为一种特殊的语言形式承载着大量的文化信息，因此它们与文化密不可分。它们是历史遗产和文化演变的产物。英汉两种语言中都存在着大量的习语，它们犹如镜子，折射出博大精深源远流长的中西文化底蕴。本文利用对比的方法阐述了英汉习语的独有特征，也就是习语的民族性，习语的民间性，习语的比喻性，习语的整体性和习语的和谐性；然后进一步分析了英汉习语在历史文化背景、地理环境、风俗习惯和宗教信仰等方面存在的差异，以期通过学习英汉习语能多地了解中国以及英语国家的文化，通过学习其文化背景知识能更好地理解其习语。
