在汉朝时期（2200年前），两只凤凰，一只雄性，叫作凤，另一只是雌性，叫作凰经常面对面出现在一起。之后，在元朝两者渐渐被合称为凤凰。但“百年之王”用来象征皇后，应当配象征皇帝的龙。从嘉靖皇帝的时期（142266）起，一对凤凰是尾部羽毛有区别的鸟，通常在一起形成一个封闭的循环图案，雄性的尾巴羽毛五个齿（五位奇数，或称阳数，雌性似乎只有一个齿，但事实上是两个二是偶数，或称阴数）。
